After giving it much thought, I come to you with some sad news today. I will be putting A Fuller Life on hold for the indefinite future to concentrate on Elizabeth Lanier Designs. Between work and other things I haven't had alot of free time lately, and the time I do have I would like to be devoting to ELD. This time of year is crazy for me and I don't want to leave you hanging with wishes of regular posts! I am hoping to be back regularly after the holiday season, and who knows, maybe some in between now and then.

This fall I'm hoping to invest in a longer faux fur vest. Living in South Texas, I find myself reaching for my fur vests during the colder months to add extra warmth without much bulk. I love the idea of the longer version to pair with skinny pants and a sweater or blouse. I've seen a ton while looking around, but pulled a few of my faves above! (I also really like the Rachel Zoe and Kenzie ones)

Looks like Houston will be getting some of my favorite Austin spots in the next few weeks. CultureMap reports that we will soon be getting a Torchy's Tacos, Tiff's Treats, and as we all know, Uchi. I'm pretty excited about Torchy's as I haven't exactly found my go to cheap, laid back, Mexican lunch spot yet.

First rumored to arrive this summer, then in October and now set for November, Uchi is said to be taking over the old Felix's, and I can barely wait another day.

Already in Dallas and Austin, Tiff's closed the details on funding to open five new locations in Houston in 2012. Hopefully somewhere near me!

Definitely opening up in my neighborhood is Torchy's. They are taking the spot of short-lived Gratefull Taco at Shepherd and Fairview. They should be open in less than three months!

If these Salted Caramel Shortbread bars from Annie's Eats taste as good as they look, I'm going to need to try them very soon!

Salted Caramel Chocolate Shortbread Bars

Yield: about 5 dozen small bars
Ingredients:
For the shortbread layer:
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tsp. baking powder
¼ tsp. salt
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temperature
½ cup sugar

For the caramel layer:
1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, cut into pieces
1 cup sugar
4 tbsp. light corn syrup
2 cans sweetened condensed milk

For the chocolate layer:
8 oz. semisweet or bittersweet chocolate, finely chopped
1 tsp. light corn syrup
½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cut into pieces
Fleur de sel or sea salt, for sprinkling

Directions:
To make the shortbread layer, preheat the oven to 325° F. Line a 9 x 13-inch baking pan with parchment paper. In a small bowl combine the flour, baking powder and salt. Stir with a fork to blend, and set aside. In the bowl of an electric mixer, beat the butter and sugar on medium speed until well blended, about 1-2 minutes. With the mixer on low speed blend in the dry ingredients just until incorporated. Transfer the dough to the prepared baking pan and press in an even layer over the bottom of the pan. Bake 15-18 minutes or until golden. (If the crust puffs up a bit while baking, just gently press it down while it is cooling.) Transfer the pan to a wire rack and let cool completely.

To make the caramel layer, combine the butter, sugar, corn syrup and condensed milk in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Heat, stirring occasionally, until the butter is melted. Increase the heat to medium-high and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to maintain a simmer, stirring constantly. Continue simmering and stirring until the mixture turns an amber color and thickens slightly. Pour the mixture over the shortbread layer, smooth the top, and allow to cool completely and set. (I chilled at this stage to ensure that the caramel layer would not melt when the warm chocolate was added.)

To make the chocolate glaze, combine the chocolate, corn syrup, and butter in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water. Heat, stirring occasionally, until the chocolate is completely melted and the mixture is smooth. Pour evenly over the caramel layer and use an offset spatula to smooth the top. Allow to cool for a minute or two and then sprinkle with fleur de sel. Chill, covered, until ready to slice and serve.

I'm loving the look of this bedroom. Clean, clear and crisp with little pops of color. I've been working on a gallery wall in my living room since I moved in and I love the one behind this bed. I am always looking for a variety of different frames, but this makes me really rethink that and lean towards a uniform frame motif.

I had all intentions of posting this yesterday, since Tuesday is the day the Rachel Zoe project airs, but the morning got away from me and before I knew it I was in bed too tired to do anything. So, instead of skipping it all together we will just pretend like it airs tonight (which works for me since I haven't watched it yet) and that this post is totally timely and relevant.

If you watch the show you were able to see RZ launch her eponymous line in last week's episode -nervously showing to fashion editors, buyers and friends. Honestly, I wasn't really sure what to think when I heard RZ was launching her own line. I definitely didn't take the QVC line too seriously - other than the fur vest that was bananas. She is an amazing stylist, but that really didn't mean she would be an amazing designer. Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised when I saw the collection:

And am even more excited about the Spring and Resort 2012 collections. I was happy to see that you don't have to be a twig like her to be able to where her clothing. The bold colors and mod silhouettes emulate the '60s and '70s style icons that RZ mimics in her everyday life. I love that the majority of the pieces look relaxed and easy to wear, very LA meets NYC, which is exactly what she was going for.

Rainy day organization

With no option but to stay inside yesterday (not complaining - we needed the rain), I decided to do a little reorganizing. Living in a one bedroom apartment can be tricky at times, so I've been trying to stay as organized as possible. And not just organized chaos, but legit organization where everything has it's own little home. I've come to the realization that whoever designed my apartment was definitely not a woman and sneakily made the closet look way more useful than it really is. To begin my project, I took all of my summer items out of my closet and drawers and put them in those storage saver bags - you know the one's you vaccuum? They are awesome. I was able to fit so much stuff in them and clear out plenty of space in my closet while not taking up too much storage space with summer stuff. Next on the list was organizing my jewelry. It had been fairly well organized in my bathroom closet but I decided that space would be more efficient for sweaters, purses and towels (odd combo, I know). As a birthday gift my friend Katie gave me one of these elephant hooks from Anthropolgie - perfect for hanging jewels! I ran over to Anthro on Saturday and got two more elephants. I debated between getting different animals, but in the end I decided on three elephants (surprise, surprise). Anyway, I am very please with the outcome and hope I can keep everything just as clean and organized as it is right now! Next up.... tackling the shoe situation....

I've been on a jewelry making spree this week, making presents and donations and a few things for the website. It's such a relaxing hobby for me I wish I would make my self sit down and getaway on a regular basis. Anyway, I haven't had time to put these earrings on the website, but they are super cute and only $25. I have a few colors shown here but they can be made in pretty much any color you want! I haven't decided what kind of backs I want to put on them, but remember that I can change the back to whatever pierced style you want or as clips.

Her young, fresh face and personal style are enviable. I love the way she takes the iconic brand and wears it for every occasion; from running errands to black tie events, she's always perfectly put together.

I really love almost everything Paule Marrot does. I don't know why either, it's not particulary my style. It doesn't look like anything in my house, my mother's, sister's, grandmother's, or aunt's, for that matter. But maybe that's why I am so attracted to it.

I'm sure you are familiar with the first painting, "Feathers", as it is constantly popping up on blogs and in magazines. I've often wondered who was the mind behind the textiles and was hard pressed to find much information on her. What I did find is that Marrot was a Parisian textile designer, engraver and painter. Known for her two-dimensional, hand-painted, mostly floral designs, she became popular in the US after World War II. She is often considered an art-deco artist for her abstract, geometric work.

These days, companies from Nike to Anthropologie continue to spread the art by using her designs and selling her work.

I am always in awe of the assortment of amazing, creative, thoughtful blogs there are out there. You have no idea how much time and effort one of these little things takes (or maybe you do, as you've seen how lazy I've been this summer), and most people are doing this on top of their full time jobs and lives beyond that.

So, when I see particularly creative one I like to share. This brings us to The Decophile. In the blogger's own words, "The Decophile is an exploration into reinventing traditional style for the way we live today."

At the ripe young age of 25, the blogger, a native Texan and NYC resident, has the taste and know-how of someone twice (triple...) her age. Her site is visually clean and charming, something that I strive for, as cluttered blogs tend to really turn me away. She will wow you with her how-to's, shopping picks and recipes, all the while delivering informative content on a fairly regular basis. There's a Shopping Cart on the site that is not yet set up, but I am quite curious as to what she'll be offering there.

Anyway, I thought I would pass along this little Internet golden nugget to you. I think her site has tremendous potential and I can't wait to see where it goes in the future.

Taking a cue from my sweet friend Emily, I headed over to the Borders going out of business sale today after work. I was a bit hesitant since the sale has been going on for a while, but much to my pleasure, the selection was not too picked over. I left with the books above (sorry for the poor picture quality) and will probably go again before it's all over. The cookbooks were especially plentiful, as was the literature, so I may go back just for gifts and bookshelf fillers, and I suggest you do the same!

While perusing Shopbop the other day, I got very excited about ditching my gladiators, flip flops and peep toes, for Fall flats. You can usually find me in driving mocs or ballet flats in the cooler months, but this year I'm looking into the penny loafers and tuxedo flats that are showing up everywhere. I met my family down in Florida for a few days and got an emergency call from them to "BRING THE AZULENE CREAM!", seems they too were tricked by the cool ocean breeze. If you haven't ever used this cream, I have to tell you that it is a miracle worker of sorts. I came in the last day looking like a lobster and after liberally applying for a couple of days, I have seen no peeling and what was sunburn is now turning into a tan. We've been using this stuff for years, but every time I offer it to someone it is new to them. So, if you are headed to the beach or the pool any time soon you should definitely pick up a tube. While it's not exactly cheap, it is definitely worth every dime!

I've been on quite the vegetable kick lately and was recently looking for some new ways to whip up my old favorites; enter my nee sous chef The Cooking Light iPad app. So far I have made the cucumber salad above (add sesame chili oil for a little more spice), the curried cauliflower (and broccoli) below, and a few other dishes. The dishes are healthy, easy to make and full of flavor. Of course it's not just vegetables, but those are the only recipes I've tried out so far. They offer the option to plan out full four course meals, nutritional values on each dish, and ways to save and print the recipes you like.

I have noticed these fine, thin (accordion) pleats all over magazines and websites lately. They seem so dynamic the way they are always pictured flowing in the wind or wistfully twirling. I wonder if in person the fabric would need to be heavier to be flattering or if these light chiffons are true to their pictures and not clingy in the wrong places.

I'm a huge fan of Sheridan French's clothing line, so it was no surprise to me when I fell in love with some of the photos of her Fort Worth home. The beautiful, bold prints are what I adore about her line and the same goes with her house. Her mom is an interior designer so obviously apple didn't fall far from the tree on this one. Although I am not crazy about the whole house, below are some of the rooms I do admire. I think my favorite things are the curtains in the living room and the huge mirror in the entry hall.

Fourth of July weekend always reminds me that we technically only have two months left to wear our all white ensembles. Although I am not a huge stickler to this rule, I do tend to tone it down a little after Labor Day weekend and usually pack away things that are all white and very summery materials, like linen and light cotton. I have been a non-believer when it comes to Maxi dresses for a while now. Continually admiring others in them, but always claiming that they weren't for me. Then, something happened and I purchased my first one a few weeks ago. I can proudly say that I am now a convert and a full believer! I now see what the fuss has been all about. They are comfortable, breezy and great for both night and day. I'm a little tall so I've been sticking with cute flats, but if your dresses are longer then I would definitely go for some fun wedges. You want the dress to hit right near your ankle bone, so you'll be able to spot whatever shoes you're wearing but you don't look like you're wearing high-waters! Pair them with bangles and a long necklace or dangling earrings like the ones shown above. A maxi dress would be great for the Fourth of July by the lake or beach!

I saw this image on another blog the other day and have been thinking about it since. I have long, curly hair and am always looking for a new way to do it since I can never get fun haircuts. Last summer I conquered the fishtail braid and this summer I may have to try out this one. On a recent antique adventure I wandered into the Antique Pavillion at Westheimer and Revere st. I pass this place about ten times a day and have been curious as to what's inside. I was in awe of all the wonderful treasures they had in there. Everything from china, oriental rugs and magnificent lamps to silver, antique jewelry and pieces like the one shown on here. The people were friendly and it was fun to explore even though there was nothing to be found in my budget! I definitely recommend stopping by if you ever have some time to kill.

This time of year yields one of my favorite delicacies: squash blossoms. So on a recent trip to Central Market I picked up a package not knowing what I would make with them. After a little research I found that most people stuff and fry them (which is how I have had them). There were also recipes for frittatas and quesadillas but I thought they would be putting my blossoms to waste. I then found a great recipe for squash blossom rice (will be trying this soon), but decided to go with a lighter dish and landed on this soup.

Here is my adapted recipe:

1/4 stick butter

1/3 cup chopped shallots

1 or 2 cloves garlic, minced

4 cups chicken broth

8 squash blossoms, trimmed and roughly chopped

1 cup of milk (I used 2%)

1/4 tsp chili powder (add more or less to your taste)

Salt and pepper

Cooked chopped shrimp - optional (but recommended!)

Melt the butter in a large saucepan. Saute the shallots, seasoning with salt and pepper. Cook about 3 minutes and add garlic, then cook about 2 more minutes. Pour in the stock and bring to a boil, lower heat and simmer 10 to 12 minutes, add the chopped blossoms and cook 5 minutes longer.

Transfer soup to a food processor and puree until smooth (I actually just pureed 2 cups of the broth and the squash blossoms). Pour back into sauce pan. Add milk and chili powder and bring to a boil (I added the shrimp here). Season generously with pepper and add salt to taste.

Hope this turns out as great for you as it did for me. Can't wait to have it again for dinner tonight!

Chanel revisited

You may recall this post a couple of weeks ago about Chanel Rouge Coco Shine lipstick. When we were in Vegas about six weeks ago I actually ended up purchasing it and absolutely love it. I have been a devoted Chanel Glossimier user for about ten years, and while I definitely still use my gloss, I am really liking this lipstick. I bought it in Romance, which looks like hot pink in the tube, but actually goes on a shiny, balmy pink. It gives me just enough color without being matte or overwhelming. I really suggest trying these out next time you hit the makeup counter.

Have you seen the new section in the fresh produce area of Central Market? I noticed it a couple of months ago but didn't pay much attention until tonight. There's a small section with "cooking kits" (if you will) which include a recipe, the fresh ingredients and several add ons if you choose to get those too. Just like most things at this store, it is awesome! Tonight I bought the tortilla soup kit (pictured above) which turned out quite successfully.

For many of the dishes they give you a vegetarian and a non vegetarian option so there is something for everyone. They had everything from soup to fajitas to guacamole to Thai green curry. These are great options if you are only cooking for one or two people because you won't have too many leftovers and you get the exact amount of fresh ingredients the recipe calls for - no more buying cilantro by the pound only to see it spoil! There are options for bigger groups too if you are cooking for more. Can't wait to try the other dishes!

Well, Target has truly outdone themselves this time. According to Vogue.com, Target and Missoni are collaborating for a collection to launch this fall. I have long been a fan of the colors and patterns of the decades-old Italian fashion house, so I can't wait to see what they bring to Target.

"Everything from clothes (women’s, men’s, kids'), to bed sheets, to enough dinnerware to set the table forcolazione, pranzo, and cena—all in plenty of Missoni’s swirls, zigzags, and near-hallucinogenic florals. “It’s been a fantastic experiencce, " says Angela Missoni, “one we are eager to share with families across the United States."

I made this curried broccoli soup from the recipe below for dinner last night and loved it. It's everything you want in a summer soup: healthy and light! If you don't like curry this is obviously something you should steer clear from, but if you do like curry (or LOVE in my case) I wouldn't be afraid to use a full two teaspoons. I also added salt and pepper which the recipe doesn't call for. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did!

Curried Broccoli Soup

Recipe via Texas Monthly

Ingredients:

2 pounds broccoli

2 medium onions

3 tablespoons butter or margarine
1 3/4 teaspoons curry powder
2 cans regular-strength chicken broth (14 ounces each)
sour cream (optional, for chilled soup)

1. Trim tough stem ends from broccoli. Cut off 1 cup tiny florets from broccoli, steam separately until tender, and set aside for garnish. Coarsely chop remaining broccoli and the onions.

2. In soup pot, melt butter over medium heat, add onion and curry powder, and cook until onions are limp. Add broth and chopped broccoli. Cover, and simmer for 12 minutes or until broccoli is tender when pierced. Whirl small batches of mixture in blender until smooth.

3. Serve hot or chilled. If serving chilled, drop a spoonful of sour cream on top of soup before sprinkling on broccoli florets. Serves 6 to 8.

I can't remember where I found this image, but I absolutely love this look; of course it wouldn't exactly go in my elephant-filled apartment but it is a fabulous idea nonetheless. When it comes to my own home, I tend to gravitate towards colorful and ethnic pieces and these baskets are both.

Living in South Texas I am sure it would be easy to find colorful baskets like this in all shapes in sizes but I think plain baskets would look great also. If you don't live near a mercado (or something similar), I would try someplace like World Market.

What a great way to welcome guests in an entry hall at farm or ranch ... along with a bench or a couple of chairs covered in my favorite new fabric:

I don't know about you, but I may or may not have been at Target this morning at an embarrassing hour. Apparently I was not the only one since many of the sizes were already sold out. But, have no fear, I just finished my first cup of tea out of my new turquoise elephant teapot and scored a few other goodies as well. I was pretty disappointed that the first tunic from the post below is not online or in any of the Houston stores, but I did manage to leave with a few other great things. I will also note that the Target website has a great selection including accessories and awesome scarves that I did not see in the store. Above I pictured a few things I picked up along with a few other things I liked from the line.

PS: If you have someone between the ages of about 3 and 10 please check out the kid stuff - it's so cute! (I tried very hard to be able to wear the little girls elephant tunic)

If you are looking for good dinner side or even a main course, try this line of risotto I found at Central Market. Like all risottos, this one takes a little TLC, but trust me, if I can make it without messing it up so can you. Risotto is one of my favorite dishes in the world so I am excited about this low(er) calorie version and to try the array of other flavors! If you can't find it at your local grocery store it looks like you can buy straight from the site. Enjoy!

When I heard Calypso was the next designer collection for Target I wasn't overjoyed. While I love the line, I didn't really know what to expect. But wow, have you seen the previews? It looks amazing. The line debuts this weekend so don't forget to hit the store (or website) early! Word is that some of the pieces are made from real linen and silk so just because they will be part of the Target line doesn't mean they will be poor quality. On top of all of that, the home items look great too - gold pouffe and an elephant teapot? yes please!

I think the photos say enough about my experience at the Blow Dry Bar, but if you need more keep reading!

I will definitely be frequenting this place in the coming months as the Houston humidity seems to be increasing by the minute. The girl who did my hair was informative, sweet and overall did a great job. I sipped a glass of champagne while profusely apologizing for the tangles and repeatedly explaining that it really doesn't hurt when you pull and tug at my curls - I've spent years doing the same thing, and still I was through in 45 minutes. My hair lasted three nights and even then I really didn't need to wash it (but just had to on principle) - it still felt clean and looked great. They use Kevin Murphy products which are paraben and sulfate free making your 'do look fab last for days.

I have already booked my next appointment and you should too!

Good news Houstonians, your new best friend has just moved into the Lamar/River Oaks Shopping Center. Opening tomorrow, The Blow Dry Bar, will be making your life easier one appointment at a time.

Native Houstonian and experienced salon professional, Rebecca Tallerine, wanted to open a business that was a "tangible, affordable luxury" and I think she's right on the money with this one. The concept is one that we've been needing in Houston (or really hot, humid South Texas) for quite a while: "Wash, Blow and Go" as they like to say. At only $35 a blowout and $55 for an updo, the stylists will have you out in 30-45 minutes. If you think you're going to be a regular, you can buy a monthly membership of two or four blowouts and receive a discount or just stop by for a walk-in appointment.

As you can see from the photos above, the salon is decked in light wood floors, smooth white walls, and beautiful peacock blue accents. Hop on over to the bar and choose from the cocktail menu of mixed 'dos, with apropos names like Shaken (wavy & messy), Neat (classic, smooth, sleek with body), and With a Twist (an updo), all while relaxing in the soft white leather chairs and enjoying a complimentary cocktail and an old movie (HD TV's will be screening hits like Pretty Woman and Breakfast at Tiffany's).

This is one local bar that you'll leave refreshed and revived with no potential regret the morning after!

I think I've stated my love for a good salad a few times before, so it shouldn't surprise you that I have fallen in love with my recent cooking purchase: For the Love of Salad by Jeanelle Mitchell. The book has a wide array of salad options ranging from leafy greens to pasta to hearty meat and seafood salads. I am especially excited about all of the new dressing options as I tend to find store bought dressings never quite satiate my appetite. What you see above is my favorite dressing/salad so far. I didn't follow the ingredients of the salad exactly and just added the vegetables I wanted -- tomatoes, avocado, radish, celery and red onion. But I did take the dressing from the book and I highly recommend it. It's easy, light and a great change to a regular vinaigrette.

Recipe:
Basil Vinaigrette
1/2 Cup lightly packed fresh basil
2 Tbsp balsamic vinegar
1/4 Tsp sea salt
1/4 Tsp ground pepper
3 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil

In a food processor, puree the basil with vinegar, salt, and pepper, then blend in oil. (You could use a blender if you don't have a food processor, or even just finely chop the basil by hand.) Easy!

On a recent trip to the makeup counter I came across the latest, greatest product from Chanel: Rouge Coco Shine. With the look of a lipstick, this product actually goes on more like a balm/gloss mixture - sheer and moisturizing with a nice shimmer. Perfect for summer. These are great if you aren't a lipstick wearer, like me, and just want a hint of long lasting color for the day. I haven't purchased yet, but I plan to do so soon.

While there is no shortage of GREAT restaurants in Houston, I still can't help but miss some of my old favorites in Austin. On the top of the list would be Tyson Cole's Uchi restaurant. Located in a restored house on South Lamar, Uchi is known for it's long wait time and fabulous fresh food. Needless to say, I am very excited about the release of the Uchi cookbook. I don't know how successful I'd be at recreating Cole's tasty dishes but I'm willing to give it a try, or maybe just add this title to my growing coffee table book collection?

In honor of St. Patty's day I'm posting a recipe from my favorite Irish-American, Bobby Flay! I made the spaghetti and meatballs from his Throwdown cookbook a couple of weeks ago and while they were quite labor-intensive they were definitely worth every minute of work.

THROWDOWN MEATBALLS

Serves: 4

Meatballs
2 tablespoons, plus 1 cup pure olive oil
4 cloves garlic, finely chopped
2 large eggs
3 tablespoons ice water
¼ cup finely chopped fresh flat leaf parsley
¾ pound ground chuck
¼ pound ground veal
¼ pound ground pork
1/3 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
¼ cup dried bread crumbs (made from fresh white bread)
Salt and freshly ground black pepper

1. Heat 2 tablespoons of the oil in a small sauté pan over medium heat. Add the garlic and cook until soft, about 1 ½ minutes.
2. Whisk together the eggs, water and parsley in a large bowl, add the garlic, meats and cheese and gently mix together until combined. Begin adding bread crumbs a tablespoon at a time until the mixture just holds together. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. Form the meat into 1 ½-inch balls.
3. Heat the remaining 1 cup of oil in a large sauté pan over high heat. Add the meatballs and fry until golden brown on all sides. Carefully remove to a baking sheet lined with paper towels.

Tomato Sauce
2 tablespoons pure olive oil
1 medium Spanish onion, finely chopped
3 cloves garlic
¼ teaspoon red chile flakes
2 tablespoons tomato paste
Two 28-ounce cans plum tomatoes and their juice, pureed in blender
1 small Cubano pepper
8 sprigs fresh flat leaf parsley
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 lb # 8 or #9 spaghetti, cooked al dente
3 tablespoons chopped fresh basil
Wedge of Parmigiano Reggiano
Fresh basil sprigs, for garnish

1. Heat the oil in a medium saucepan over medium-high heat. Add the onion, garlic and chile flakes and cook until the onion is soft and the garlic is lightly golden brown on both sides. Add the tomato paste and cook for 30 seconds.
2. Stir in the pureed tomatoes, Cubano pepper and parsley sprigs, bring to a boil and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the meatballs, reduce the heat to medium and continue cooking until the meatballs have cooked through and the sauce has thickened, 15 to 20 minutes longer. Place the spaghetti on a platter, top with the meatballs (using a slotted spoon). Stir the chopped basil into the tomato sauce and ladle some of the sauce over the spaghetti and meatballs. Grate lots of parmesan cheese over the top and garnish with fresh basil sprigs.
